Rajasthan
is synonymous with festivity and color. This state
is vibrant with festivals and celebration, music
and dance. It is the epitome of ceremonies, carnivals
and creativity as it is the apex of passion and
grandeur. All festivals, and there are numerous,
are celebrated with great pomp and overwhelming
style. From the resplendent jewelry and charming
costumes to reverberant processions and cattle
fairs … Rajasthan is definitely where gaiety dwells.
FESTIVALS
IN RAJASTHAN RANGE FROM MOST POPULAR TO MOST LIMITED
BUT ALL HAVE THEIR SIGNIFICANCE.
And all are colourful, distinct
and interesting. There are many festivals such
as Diwali and Holi that are celebrated by one
and all and a tourist cannot help but noticing
them. Yet,
|
|
there
are many like Teej that are city and location
specific, being at the right place and right
time is most important. Most of these do
not follow the English calendar and hence
the dates change every year. For convenience
and better planning, dates till year 2010
of a few (though the actual number of festivals
is very high!) important festivals are given
below
Teej
Festival
This
fun-filled festival marks the arrival of
the monsoons to the arid land of Rajasthan.
Women dress up in colorful clothes and attractive
jewelry. Music, sweets, visits to the bazaar
and the preparation of special dishes are
important aspects of the festival.

Desert
Festival - Jaisalmer
The city of Jaisalmer
comes alive every year during January -
February, with the staging of the Desert
Festival. The exhibition of performing arts
on the expanse of golden sands is a breathtaking
sight at Sam. Turban tying competition and
camel races are the other exciting events.
Grand Finale takes place near Sam Dune at
Dune Safari Camp.
Pushkar
Fair
The Pushkar fair is
by far the largest fair of cattle and other
domesticated animals. It takes place in
October - November. Along with the massive
exhibition
and trade of domesticated animals, animal
races and indulgence in folk dances and
music are also important elements. This
festival of color and music is truly exhilarating
and unique. |
